Monitoring is used to manage risk posed by insects and mold. Insects that infest the interior of grain cause a significant deterioration in quality. Insects can cause grain to warm, providing moisture migration that can support mold growth and production of mycotoxins. The use of insect traps includes hormone stick traps for moths and pit-fall traps for insects in the grain mass. Also monitor the temperature of the grain during aeration and the fan run time when cooling grain to ensure movement of the cooling front through the grain mass.

BMP: Monitor grain storage temperature, aeration system run time, and the presence of insects.
